The 8th Hydropower for Today Forum held in Lusaka, Zambia

In order to promote the “Belt and Road” initiative and inclusive and sustainable industrial development, and realization of the UN’s 2030 SDGs as well as the African Union’s 2063 Agenda, the 8th Hydropower for Today Forum, which was co-hosted by the Ministry of Water Resources, P. R. China, UNIDO, Zambian Ministry of Energy and Zambian Ministry of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, co-organized by the COMESA and ICSHP, was successfully held at the COMESA headquarters on 6-7 November, 2018 in Lusaka, Zambia.     Totally over 150 participants from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America attended. The opening ceremony was synchronously live broadcasted online, attracting the attention of nearly ten thousand people from all over the world.

Mr. Li Jie, the Chinese Ambassador in Zambia, and Prof. Liu Heng, the Senior Technical Expert of UNIDO, attended the forum and delivered speeches. Mr. Wang Annan, the Chief Planner of the Ministry of Water Resources of P. R. China, Ms. Chileshe Kapwepwe, the Secretary General of COMESA, and Mr. Brig. Chola, the Permanent Secretary of the Zambian Ministry of Energy, made speeches on the opening ceremony.

The theme of the forum is “Hydropower Promotes Industrial Development in Africa” and four  topics are focused on Hydropower Development and African Industrial Development, Hydropower Development and Financing in Africa, South-South Cooperation and Renewable Energy Development in Africa, SHP International Standards and Green SHP. The Lusaka Declaration was unanimously approved by all the participants on the closing ceremony of the forum, calling for further South-South cooperation to promote the hydropower development in Africa, emphasizing on hydropower development in accordance with the concept of green development, putting forward innovative investment and financing systems, expecting the publishment and popularization of the international standard of small hydropower, as well as better and sustainably making greater contribution to the hydropower and industrial development in Africa through the establishment of consensus and coordination mechanisms. During the forum, the training seminar on small hydropower development for Africa which was sponsored by the UNIDO Center for South-South Industrial Cooperation in China and co-organized by COMESA and ICSHP was held specifically for Zambian hydropower technicians and managing staffs. 

Since 2005, the Hydropower for Today Forum has been organized for seven times, in order to provide a platform to decision-makers, scientific institutions, manufacturing enterprises as well as stakeholders from all over the world regarding the fields of global energy and hydropower for exchange and cooperation among international organizations, developed countries and developing countries. Now the Forum has been an important way for China to share experiences, seek cooperation and common development.
