INSHP and UNIDO jointly released the Technical Guidelines for the Development of Small Hydropower Plants

Small hydropower is an important renewable energy source widely recognized by the international community to solve the problem of electrification in remote rural areas. China, Europe, North and South Americas already have high installed capacity of small hydropower. However, restricted by various factors, a large number of small hydropower resources are still undeveloped in developing countries, and the local power supply cannot meet development needs; furthermore, there are no globally applicable small hydropower standards and good practices. To this end, with the strong support of the Chinese government, the INSHP and the UNIDO have collaborated to develop the widely applicable technical guidelines for small hydropower plants by applying internationally recognized expertise and best practices, and recently published the Technical Guidelines for the Development of Small Hydropower Plants (English edition).

The release of the technical guidelines will greatly promote the development of global small hydropower, and various countries will use the technical guidelines to support their current policies, technologies and ecological environment. For countries lacking professional institutions and technical capabilities, the publication of the guidelines will help improve their technical level of small hydropower. By formulating preferential policies, it will attract investment in small hydropower, and encourage small hydropower development, thus promoting national economic development.

The INSHP and the UNIDO will launch versions in different languages in the future to continuously improve and promote the application of technical guidelines in global small hydropower development.

Brief introduction and download address of the Technical Guidelines for the Development of Small Hydropower Plants (English edition):

The Technical Guidelines for the Development of Small Hydropower Plants (English edition) is divided into 5 volumes, including Terms and Definitions, Technical Guidelines for Design, Technical Guidelines for Units, Technical Guidelines for Construction, and Technical Guidelines for Management, and 26 tomes. It can be used as a technical guidance document for the planning, design, construction and management of small hydropower plants with installed capacity of 30MW and below, of which:

Terms and Definitions provides professional technical terms and definitions commonly used in small hydropower plants.

Technical Guidelines for Design offers the basic technical requirements, methodologies and procedures for the design of small hydropower plants, and covers site selection planning, hydrology, engineering geology, engineering layout, kinetic energy calculation, hydraulic engineering, mechanical and electrical equipment selection, construction, engineering cost estimation, economic evaluation, investment, social and environmental evaluation and other professional fields.

Technical Guidelines for Units sets forth specific technical requirements for water turbines, generators, speed control systems, excitation systems, main valves, monitoring protection and DC power system equipment of small hydropower plants.

Technical Guidelines for Construction provides normative guidance on the construction technology of small hydropower plants.

Technical Guidelines for Management sets out normative guidance on technical aspects such as project management, operation and maintenance, technical transformation and engineering acceptance of small hydropower plants.
