UPGRADING OF CHINA SHP CAPACITY
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) “Upgrading of China SHP Capacity” project was officially launched 2015. The project aims to upgrade the environmental performance of rural SHP stations in China.
The 5-year, USD $60 million GEF project will be jointly implemented by the Chinese Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Finance, UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP).
The project builds upon the SHP capacity expansion program of the Ministry of Water Resources by reducing the environmental impact of SHP plants to better meet the challenges imposed by climate change. The objective of this project is to improve the ecological condition in rivers, increase SHP efficiency and output, enhance management and safety practices, introduce green standards and enhance local capacities.
Project components include:
1. Strengthened policy and institutional framework promoting green SHP plants;
2. Greening and improving the management and safety standards of existing SHP plants;
3. Improved knowledge base and capacities of decision makers, experts and technicians in the fields of green SHP retrofitting and management;
4. Monitoring and evaluation.
